Counter-ion Release and Electrostatic Adsorption Typeset Using Revt E X

چکیده
The effective charge of a rigid polyelectrolyte (PE) approaching an oppo-sitely charged surface is studied. The cases of a weak (annealed) and strongly charged PE with condensed counterions (such as DNA) are discussed. In the most interesting case of the adsorption onto a substrate of low dielectric constant (such as a lipid membrane or a mica sheet) the condensed counte-rions are not always released as the PE approaches the substrate, because of the major importance of the image charge effect. For the adsorption onto a surface with freely moving charges, the image charge effect becomes less important and full release is often expected.

Adsorption of 4 He on a Single C 60 Typeset Using Revt E X 1
The adsorption of 4He inside and outside a single fullerene C60 is studied. A physisorption potential is proposed. The energetics and structural features of C60HeN clusters are investigated. Particular attention is paid to the growth of the highly pronounced layered density profile. The evolution towards bulk liquid and surface thickness at the free interface are discussed. متن کاملOpposite counter-ion effects on condensed bundles of highly charged supramolecular nanotubes in water.
Although ion specificity in aqueous solutions is well known, its manifestation in unconventional strong electrostatic interactions remains implicit. Herein, the ionic effects in dense packing of highly charged polyelectrolytes are investigated in supramolecular nanotube prototypes. Distinctive behaviors of the orthorhombic arrays composed of supramolecular nanotubes in various aqueous solutions...
متن کاملTheory of Adsorption and Desorption of H 2 /si(001) Typeset Using Revt E X
While the small sticking coefficient for molecular hydrogen on the Si(001) surface apparently requires a large energy barrier of adsorption, no such barrier is observed in desorption experiments. We have calculated the potential-energy surface of an H 2 molecule in front of a Si(001) surface. If we relax the Si substrate, we find an optimum desorption path with a low (< ∼ 0.3 eV) ad-sorption en...
متن کاملThe Reconstruction of Ni and Rh (001) Surfaces upon Carbon, Nitrogen, or Oxygen Adsorption Typeset Using Revt E X 1
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar—as from STM images— clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, c(2 × 2), pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images—showing a (2 × 2)p4g ...
متن کاملFiltering Number States of the Vibrational Motion of an Ion Typeset Using Revt E X
We propose a scheme to generate number states, and specific superpositions of them, of the vibrational motion of a trapped ion via laser excitation of two vibronic transitions. Without detrimental effects on the internal state preparation , the ion can be initially in thermal motion and undergo spontaneous emission. In particular, robust to noise qubits (α|0 + β|1 states) can be generated with ...
